Shamrock Rovers kicked off their 2023 pre-season with a 4-0 win over Lucan United in the SRFC Roadstone Academy Complex yesterday, in the annual Molly O'Toole Memorial Cup.
With results not the focus during pre-season, this game gave fans a chance to see the Hoops in action for the first-time this year, as Stephen Bradley used a total of 21 players throughout the 90 minutes.
Both sides went into the break level at 0-0, but Rovers upped their levels to score four without reply in the second half. New striker Johnny Kenny opened the scoring early in second-half for the hoops, before a quick-fire double from Simon Power & Richie Towell extended our lead to three. Kenny netted his second of the game late on as Rovers ran our 4-0 winners.
The Rovers side were made up for regular first-teamers, some U19s, and also two trialists - one of which Hoops fans have found out to be former Chelsea FC academy player George McEachran. George - the younger brother of Josh who currently plays with MK Dons - is a 22 year old box-to-box midfielder. The Englishman never made an appearance for the Chelsea first-team, but did spend some time on loan at SC Cambuur in 2020 - a side that current Hoop Jack Byrne spent time on loan with during the 2015/16 season.
Rovers continue their pre-season schedule with a double header next Saturday (January 21st) as we welcome both Bray Wanderers and Cobh Ramblers to our SRFC Roadstone Academy Complex.
