Shamrock Rovers vs Galway United
Tallaght Stadium - 8pm
Friday, July 23rd
Shamrock Rovers begin their 2021 FAI Cup campaign with the visit of Galway United to Tallaght Stadium this Friday in an 8pm kick-off. Rovers will welcome John Caulfield's side to the capital - in a game that will be played in front of just 500 fans.
The Hoops come into this cup clash on the back of an impressive 4-2 win over Derry City at The Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium last Friday, whilst the Tribesmen come into the game after a 0-0 draw away to Bray Wanderers last weekend too.
This is the first meeting between the two sides since 2019, when Rovers narrowly beat Galway 2-1 thanks to an injury time winner from Carrick-On-Suir man Lee Grace. Maurice Nugent had given the hosts the lead in the first-half, with Aaron Greene netting the equaliser for Stephen Bradley's side before Grace's late winner.
Speaking to the Shamrock Rovers media team ahead of the game, Stephen Bradley gave his thoughts on this weekend's opponents:
"I’ve watched their last few games & they’re doing really well. We know John (Caulfield) is a top manager, and he’ll have them right at it tomorrow night. They’ll come with no fear, it’s a free shot for Galway, and we’ve got to be ready for that. We’ve got to respect that, and make sure that we give Galway the respect we gave Slovan and the respect we gave Derry, because anything less will give Galway a right chance of winning the game. "
Galway boss John Caulfield also gave his thoughts on the game to galwayunitedfc.ie:
“It is going to be a different level. We will go there to work hard and do our best. We will enjoy the occasion and it will be good for the lads to see the difference in standards between the two divisions. “We will give everything and have a go but it will be a real challenge against the top club in the country.”
